Companies in the biotechnology sector, often abbreviated to Biotech operate in all applications of technology to biology. The most common definition used is the one given by the United Nations which states:
"Biotechnology is the technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof to produce or modify products or processes for a specific purpose".
In finance, the biotechnology sector is represented by all those companies that deal with the study and development of drugs aimed at treating various types of diseases. The biotechnology or biotech sector is closely related to the pharmaceutical sector, given the ongoing relationship between biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
