The IEA (International Energy Agency) is an international intergovernmental organization founded in 1974 by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) following the 1973 oil shock.
The agency was created to facilitate the coordination of energy policies of the member countries to ensure the stability of energy supplies (mainly oil) in order to support economic growth. In more recent times the agency has extended its mandate in the direction of sustainable development by promoting and developing alternative energy source projects.
The IEA deals with all energy sectors except nuclear energy, where it is only concerned with compiling general budget statistics.
