The Navy is the Armed Forces of the Italian Republic, entrusted with the control and conduct of naval operations in territorial and international waters.
The Navy’s mission is to ensure the defense of the country against any possible threat to its territory, commercial lines, maritime traffic, and its citizens abroad.
Hierarchically, it reports to the President of the Republic, while operationally, it reports to the Ministry of Defense.
The Navy is divided into seven branches:
- General Staff Corps (SM);
- Naval Engineer Corps (GN);
- Naval Weapons Corps (AN);
- Maritime Military Medical Corps (SAN);
- Maritime Military Commissariat Corps (CM);
- Coast Guard Port Authority Corps (CP);
- Maritime Military Crew Corps (CEMM).
To join the Navy, candidates must pass a public competitive examination. There are various opportunities depending on age (from 17 to 38 years old) and educational qualification.
