A passport is a document that authorizes a person, certifying their identity, to travel outside of Italy and the European Union. An Italian passport is valid for 10 years; upon expiration, it is not possible to passport renewal and must be requested for a new document.
Since 2010, passports in Italy have been electronic, as the 48-page booklet contains a microchip containing all of the owner’s personal information.
You can request an electronic passport at:
- the Police Headquarters;
- the passport office of the Public Security Commissioner;
- the Carabinieri station.
The application must be submitted with the following documents:
- printed passport application form;
- valid identification document;
- 2 passport photos;
- receipt of payment, via bank transfer, of €42.50 for an ordinary passport;
- passport stamp duty of €73.50;
- if you are the parent of a minor, the signed consent of the other parent is required.
