Traffic Laws

In law, the term Highway Code refers to the set of rules that regulate the circulation of pedestrians, vehicles and animals on the road.

Each state has its own rules for the Highway Code in compliance with international agreements. In Italy the new Highway Code was approved in 1992, with Legislative Decree n°285, and came into force the following year. Naturally, since then the text has been constantly updated to adapt to both European legislation and the evolution of society.

Currently the Highway Code in Italy is made up of 240 articles divided into seven different titles:

  • TITLE III - Vehicles (from Art. 46 to Art. 114);
  • TITLE IV - Driving of vehicles and handling of animals (from Art. 115 to Art. 139);
  • TITLE V - Rules of conduct (from Art. 140 to Art. 193);
  • TITLE VI - Of the offenses provided for by this Code and the related sanctions (from Art. 194 to Art. 224-bis);
