Ursula von der Leyen is a German politician, although born in Belgium in October 1958, part of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party the same by Angela Merkel.
Daughter of a politician, married with seven children, von der Leyen has a long and prestigious political curriculum behind her. After starting as an MP for Lower Saxony, Merkel appointed her Minister for the Family in 2005.
Subsequently, from 2009 to 2013, she became minister of Labour, to then move on to the dicastery of Defence thus becoming the first woman in the history of Germany to hold this role.
Following the European elections of May 2019, Ursula von der Leyen is nominated by the European Council as the next President of the European Commission, thus succeeding Jean Claude Juncker.
