The study and passion for ancient, rare or unusual objects are not just a hobby or a pastime. collecting is not only influenced by market logic, but in turn has important effects on the value of products.

Thus, coins and banknotes can reach a negligible value, not only less than the nominal value but even lower than the print value. Other times, cash that has no legal value reaches an unparalleled appeal, reaching astonishing figures that do not diminish the enthusiasm of collectors at all.

There are examples that easily exceed the cost of a new car, just like this 1953 banknote worth 25,000 euros. As often happens, the value is far disproportionate to the nominal value, which today would be around 3 euros.

The fact that it is a very old banknote, however, increases the value of the few authentic copies to this mind-boggling figure.

Many people have old banknotes and coins at home without even suspecting that they possess real treasures. This is not the case for Italians, however, even if anything could be. The habit of keeping money in foreign currency as a memento of trips and important moments has always been widespread, so one should not draw hasty conclusions.

In any case, collecting knows no geographical boundaries, and the history of this banknote is certainly worthy of attention. It is a Spanish peseta printed in Madrid on July 22, 1953, a currency that has not been in circulation for over 20 years but that today would have a value of around 3 euros. As anticipated, however, in the world of collecting its value is decidedly higher, up to 25,000 euros.

Outside the sector it might seem excessive, given that most families do not spend this amount even for a new car, but the value of pesetas is not at all modest. However, it is difficult to get to this specimen, on which the first Marquis of Santa Cruz de Mudela is depicted. This is the Spanish general Álvaro de Bazán, a naval commander who participated in the war of Cyprus and the Portuguese War of Succession. On the back of the banknote, however, the nominal value of the peseta is indicated, and a galleon is depicted.

However, there is no shortage of other peseta banknotes with a considerable collector’s value. Even without reaching these very high figures, at least for now, there are several highly desired specimens that do not fall below several thousand euros. Among these is the 100 pesetas note of the Lady of Elche, an Iberian sculpture made between the 5th and 4th centuries BC still shrouded in mystery, also depicted on some 1 peseta notes.

The 100 pesetas note, however, was printed during the Spanish Civil War and features the coat of arms of the Spanish Republic on the back.

In addition to being decidedly old, this note is quite rare, as the entry of the Nationalists into Barcelona in 1939 - causing the fall of the city culminating in the Battle of Catalonia - led to the confiscation of most of the notes in circulation.

Thus, almost all the notes were destroyed. However, there are copies by a British printer that reach 15,000 and 20,000 euros. Worth less, but still interesting figures, are the 1,000 pesetas of the Alcázar of Toledo banknotes, which are depicted on the back as one of the first examples of the Spanish Civil War.

This banknote is sold today for around 3,600 euros, compared to an almost negligible face value. This is not an unusual mechanism in collecting, which is repeated continuously with all currencies, including the lira.
