Most valuable brands 2023: how many billions are they worth?

Brand Finance Global 500 2023 Ranking: What are the Most Valuable Brands?

The new year saw a change at the podium, where Apple no longer triumphs, but Amazon. Indeed, the latter has once again become the most valuable brand in the world, despite its value dropping by 15% this year from $350.3 billion to $299.3 billion.

Apple, however, lost only one position, placing itself in second place. The tech sector dominates the list of most valuable brands globally.

Here is the ranking of the world’s most valuable brands: who are they and how many billions do they raise?

Top 10 most valuable brands in the world

To understand the meaning of the ranking renewed every year on the value of a brand, it is interesting to read the words of David Haigh Chairman & CEO of Brand Finance:

“What is the purpose of a strong brand: attracting customers, retaining, motivating staff? All true, but at least for a commercial brand the first answer must always be to make money”

With this premise, 2023 is still the year of technology. Amazon topped the list as the world’s most valuable brand, despite losing $51 billion in value.

Apple then slipped to second place, losing $57.6 billion. Of note, according to the report, Tesla and BYD are among the fastest growing brands in the world as demand for electric vehicles increases.

These are the top 10 brands worldwide based on valuation and growth over the previous year:

  • 1. Amazon: $299.3 billion, -14.6%
  • 2. Apple: $297.5 billion, -16.2%
  • 3. Google: $28.4 billion, +6.8%%
  • 4. Microsoft: $191.6 billion, +4.0%
  • 5. Walmart: $113.8 billion, +1.7%
  • 6. Samsung: $99.7 billion, -7.1%
  • 7. ICBC: $69.5 billion, -7.4%
  • 8. Verizon: $67.4 billion, -3.2%
  • 9. Tesla: $66.2 billion, +43.9%
  • 10. Tik Tok: 65.7 billion dollars, +11.4%

What stood out prominently in this edition of the report is that BYD (brand value increased by 57% to $10.1 billion) is the fastest growing brand in the Brand Finance Global 500 2023, with US oil and gas brands ConocoPhillips (brand value grew by 56% to $8.9 billion) and Maersk (brand value increased 53% to $7.4 billion) following. LinkedIn also performed well (brand value increased by 49% to $15.5 billion).

In addition, the Tech sector once again remained the most important and valuable in the rankings, with an overall brand value of at least US $1.2 trillion, or about 15% of the total value of the rankings. The retail sector was again the second most valuable. A boom in e-commerce during the pandemic saw it surpass $1 trillion last year for the first time.

Interestingly, two German brands, telecoms giant Deutsche Telekom (brand value up 5% to US$62.9 billion) and automaker Mercedes-Benz (brand value down 3% to $58.8 billion) were competing for the position of Europe’s most valuable brand.

Brand Finance has also updated the list of brands with greater strength, considering marketing investments, image & reputation return and business performance as parameters. In this ranking, the winner is Google, followed by Youtube and Swisscom.
