The EU institutions have reached an agreement on the production of electricity: renewable sources will have to cover at least 42.5% of EU consumption by 2030.

Renewables, new EU agreement: how energy consumption will change

By 2030, the EU will have to reach a share of 42.5% of final electricity consumption produced through renewable sources. The European institutions have in fact found agreement on the new directive to regulate renewable energies which increases the energy produced through green systems.

The official announcement comes with a tweet from the Swedish presidency of the EU. As explained by Markus Pieper, rapporteur of the measure to the European Parliament, the target of renewables) rises to 42.5% by 2030: up to now it was set at 32%.

The new target is also higher than the proposed by the European Commission in the 2021 climate package, which set the bar at 40%. Only the proposal of the RePower Eu package set a higher target, with a proposal of 45%. Those who hoped for an environmental breakthrough, therefore, seem to be satisfied.

The EU agreement on renewables

The first and main point of the agreement, therefore, is the objective of 42.5% of energy produced from renewable sources. Added to this is an acceleration on permits, as Pieper himself always explains: in this case the aim is to avoid bureaucratic obstacles on the issue of new concessions. Furthermore, the production of energy from biomass will remain 100% renewable, this is guaranteed once the agreement is reached. For the Pieper, today’s agreement marks a "good day for the European energy transition".

The other points of the agreement on renewables

The agreement also touches on other points, always on the same theme. On the buildings front, the goal is set - again within 2030 - to use renewable energies for 49% of the energy used. According to the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, l he agreement with Parliament and the Council on the rules concerning renewable energy represents an "ambitious compromise" and an "important step in the implementation of the Green Deal and RePower Eu".

Among the binding objectives for the Member States there are also those relating to the transport sector. Countries will be able to choose between a target of at least 29% share of renewables in final energy consumption in transport by 2030, or a 14.5% reduction in gas intensity greenhouse effect thanks to the use of renewables.

Still with regard to transport, renewables should cover at least 5.5% of the sector’s consumption with advanced biofuels and renewable fuels of non-biological origin, such as renewable hydrogen or synthetic fuels based on hydrogen. The agreement also provides for more stringent requirements for production of energy from biomass, which are in any case considered renewable. The agreement will now have to be ratified by the EU Parliament and Council.
