Bill Gates, born William Henry Gates III, is an American business magnate, investor, author, philanthropist, and founder of Microsoft Corporation.
Born in 1955, during his career at Microsoft he held the position of president, CEO and chief software architect. He was the company’s primary shareholder until May 2014.
In 1975, together with Paul Allen, Bill Gates launched Microsoft, which would later become the largest PC software company in the world. Gates led the company as chief executive officer until his resignation in January 2000, but has since remained chairman and created for himself the position of chief software architect.
In 2000 he created the humanitarian foundation Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
From 1995 to 2017, he was always named richest man in the world by Forbes with the exception of just four years. In recent months he has been occasionally overtaken in the rankings by Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.
