Matteo Renzi (Florence, January 11, 1975) is an Italian politician and leader of Italia Viva. Initially under the banner of Margherita from 2004 to 2009, he was President of the Province of Florence, then leading the Tuscan capital as mayor from 2009 to 2014 after moving to the ranks of the Democratic Party.
After winning the primaries on December 15, 2013, he was appointed secretary of the PD, on February 22, 2014 he became President of the Council, the youngest in history.
However, his mandate lasted until December 12, 2016, the day of his resignation following the victory of the No in the Constitutional Referendum promoted by him despite the success in the previous European elections where the PD reached 40%.
After resigning as party secretary, he returned to the Democratic Party by winning the primaries on April 30, 2017. Renzi thus also took on the role of prime ministerial candidate for the Centre-left in the political elections of March 4, 2018.
The results were, however, disappointing for the Democratic Party (18.72%). However, elected senator after winning the seat in his constituency of Florence, he resigned again from the position of party secretary.
In September 2019, after having contributed to the birth of the second Conte government, he decided to leave the Democratic Party, later giving birth to the new party Italia Viva.
In January 2021, following the resignation of its members from the yellow-red executive, Matteo Renzi was instrumental in the changeover at Palazzo Chigi between Giuseppe Conte and Mario Draghi.
