Olaf Scholz is a German politician from the Social Democratic Party. On the occasion of the federal elections in Germany on 26 September 2021, he was listed as the SPD’s candidate for chancellor and led the party to electoral victory. He is currently head of the government.
Trained in the social democratic political school and tradition, he held the position of General Secretary of the SPD from 2002 to 2004 during the last period of the leadership of Gerhard Schröder, the last chancellor expressed by the centre-left.
From 2007 to 2009, during the first coalition government led by Merkel, Scholz was part of the executive as Minister of Labor.
Furthermore, until 2011 he was a member of the Bundestag until his election as Mayor of Hamburg, a position he held from 2011 to 2018.
In 2018, after the agreement reached with the CDU/CSU for the fourth Merkel Government again in grand coalition with the SPD, Olaf Scholz was designated as vice-chancellor and finance minister.
In the 2021 elections, the Social Democrats (SPD) obtained 25.74%, becoming the first German party in terms of approval. The Christian Democrats (CDU-CSU) stopped at 24.08%.
