Your Samsung smartphone has many useful features that you may not have noticed yet. Here are five of them, absolutely worth trying.
You’re almost certainly not making the most of your Samsung smartphone. But fear not: with this article you can explore 5 hidden Android 14 features in the settings.
You can have a calculator always available, send funny GIFs to friends and family, and copy text with the camera in moments.
Side Panel Calculator
For more complicated calculations you can use “Edge Panel” whose side panel is located above the apps. Swipe from the edge in the top right corner of the screen to activate it and tap the gear icon at the bottom. Go to the Galaxy Store via the button below, search for “Calculator Panel” and install the app. Then swipe in from the right side again to use the Edge panel and once again for the calculator.
This feature can help you when splitting an account or sending a payment request. It saves you from closing the banking app, opening the calculator app, and having to log back into the bank after doing the math.
Create a GIF from a video
GIFs are low-resolution videos that repeat and don’t take up much space.
To create one, open the Gallery app and choose the video. Tap the three dots at the top right and select “Open in Video Player”. Once opened, press the “GIF” button at the top left. Adjust the length and speed of the GIF (a specific menu will appear) and when you are finished click on “Save”. Then the GIF will be in your gallery and you can share it like a normal image.

Set a GIF as your profile picture
This is a feature that few people know about: you can set a GIF as your profile picture in your Samsung contacts. To do this, first open the Contacts app and select a contact. Tap the pencil icon in the top right to edit profile. Below your profile picture, choose “Gallery” and select the desired GIF. If necessary, cut it out. When you are satisfied click on “Save”. Now if this person calls you or sends you a message, the GIF will appear on the screen.
Extract text from a photo
This feature is very handy if you find a nice text or quote in a book and prefer not to type it by hand. Open the conversation with the person you want to send the text to and click on the text bar. Tap the three dots above the keyboard and select “Text Mining”. The camera will open. Frame the text you want to copy and press the “Text Extraction” button that you will find at the bottom. The camera will scan the text and insert it into the text bar within seconds. Then, you can edit and send it as you usually do.
Take a screenshot with your hand
If you have a Samsung phone, you can take a screenshot using your hand instead of the buttons. Swipe the screen from left to right or vice versa with the side of your hand. If this feature is not active, go to settings, select “Advanced features”, then “Movements and gestures” and activate the “Swipe for screenshot” option. This way you will save time and not have to press a combination of buttons. This feature has been present in Samsung phones for years but is still little known.
