How much does the iron consume?
Before discovering what are the average expenses of a ironing board from the point of view of consumption, it is important to premise that there is no single answer: not all irons have the same power consumption. Much depends on the type of the appliance.
For those who do not know, in fact, there are different types of iron, each one is suitable for a specific use and so in the same way energy consumption is also different. Mainly there are three most common models, as explained by the multinational Engie:
- compact iron
- iron with boiler
- steam generator iron
The compact iron has an internal tank and the plate is heated by an electric coil. The water inside the tank partly ends up on the plate, also releasing steam. Considering an average cost of electricity of approximately 0.25€/kWh, based on the power of the appliance, a compact iron of 2000-2600Watt consumes on average between 0,50-0.65 euros per hour.
A steam generator iron is usually a heavier model, but is described by experts as ideal for long sessions required to iron all clothes. The power can vary between 1800-2400 Watt, ironing in the first case up to six shirts per hour, in the second up to 12 shirts. In this case an ironing consums 0.45-0.60 euro per hour
Steam generator irons are like compact ironing boards but have a larger tank which is separate from the iron. According to Engie these are suitable for those who have to iron enough clothes in a short time. On average, an iron of 2400 W consumes between or 0.50-0.60 euros per hour.
How to save energy when using the iron
And if an average iron consumes 50 cents in an hour, it is also true that if it is used very frequently this can have a moderate impact on the bill. It is therefore always convenient to know what some tricks might be for being able to save.
- Choose the right model for your needs.
- It is preferable to iron only garments that require it such as shirts.
- Use the iron as little as possible, it is advisable to hang clothes so that they dry with fewer creases.
