According to an internally shared document, Microsoft is considering moving Windows entirely to the cloud. Here’s what we know about it.
The relationship between Microsoft and the cloud has been very solid for some time now. Bill Gates’ former company already uses this technology in the commercial sector, with Windows 365.
Now, according to an internal presentation released by the US newspaper The Verge, the company is evaluating the possibility of using 365 to transfer Windows 11 to the cloud as well.
Windows available on the cloud, but how?
The presentation explaining Microsoft’s strategy to move Windows to the cloud dates back to June 2022 and emerged due to a lawsuit opposing the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Microsoft has in fact been called to account for its strategy in the gaming sector and how this relates to other areas of the company.
The goal is clearly stated: "To progressively move Windows 11 to the cloud by leveraging Windows 365 to deliver a full Windows operating system delivered from the cloud to any device".
This, according to Microsoft, would represent a significant opportunity since it would make it possible to "use the power of the cloud and the customer to enable advanced services based on artificial intelligence and support the user’s digital experience with these new technologies".
According to reports from The Verge, one of the next updates from Microsoft should integrate Windows 365 Boot, which will allow Windows 11 devices to directly access a cloud version right from the boot, instead of the local version of Windows.
Within Windows 11 365 Switch is also integrated, which allows users to integrate the cloud-based operating system within the Task View function.
Microsoft: other long-term goals
Within the slide made public by The Verge, it is clear that bringing Windows 11 to the cloud is not Microsoft’s only long-term goal. Another goal of the company is to create custom chips that ensure competitiveness in the ecosystem and hardware. To achieve this, according to the company, it is necessary to make investments and start new partnerships.
The other goal is the need to start partnerships or acquire "popular everyday use experiences".
