Ryanair changes its baggage rules with its own hands, sparking complaints from passengers who are not at all happy about the price increases.

Ryanair changes hand luggage rules (and passengers aren't happy)

Ryanair has announced another change to its hand luggage rules, with changes to fees that are making passengers unhappy. According to some media reports, the airline explained the decision as the need to adjust costs to the fee for checking baggage at the gate. This means that choosing priority boarding after booking costs more for travellers.

Ryanair is often criticised by passengers for the numerous additional fees applied, which can quickly increase the cost of the trip paid at booking. And this is precisely what the accusations launched by British travellers on social media are about, irritated by the price increases and the various additional costs.

In line with Ryanair’s policy, the changes concern changes to baggage made after booking, which now cost more. The airline intends to encourage travelers to use online check-in and avoid all the unnecessary steps before boarding. In addition to speeding up the procedure, this would make it possible to reduce the number of employees and thus contain the costs of tickets.

For this reason, additional baggage will always have the same cost, but only for those who include them immediately in the travel booking. Otherwise, adding them later will cost even more than usual. Let’s see all the news.

Ryanair changes the rules on hand luggage

As many of you will know, the cost of a Ryanair flight ticket includes a hand luggage within the dimensions of 40x20x25 cm. Each airline has its own reference rules and even if in general the measurements of free baggage are quite similar, you should always check before going to the airport. As anticipated, in fact, the rates for additional baggage have been changed, that is, the suitcase that meets the following requirements:

  • maximum dimensions allowed of 55x40x20 cm;
  • weight up to 10 kg.

To carry a second piece of hand baggage within the limits, those flying with Ryanair must pay an additional fee for priority boarding, between 6 and 36 euros (or pounds). The cost variation depends on the route to be traveled and the dates selected for the trip.

Those who request priority boarding at a later time than the booking or directly at the airport for baggage up to 10 kg must pay an even higher cost. In particular, the previous rate was between 20 and 38 euros (or pounds), while now it can reach up to 60 euros (or pounds).

According to what was reported by the airline’s spokespersons to British newspapers, this choice was necessary to adapt to the costs applied for baggage at the gate. Below are the baggage fees, to which VAT must be added according to local regulations on domestic flights in:

  • Italy;
  • Bulgaria;
  • France;
  • Germany;
  • Greece;
  • Poland;
  • Portugal;
  • Romania;
  • Spain;
  • Sweden.
Baggage Cost on bookingCost after booking
Small baggage 0 euros (or pounds) 0 euros (or pounds)
Priority boarding with 2nd hand luggage between 6 and 36 euros (or pounds) between 20 and 60 euros (or pounds)
10 kg baggage boarding between 11.99 and 29.99 euros (or pounds) between 23.99 and 40 euros (or pounds)
20 kg baggage between 18.99 and 59.99 euros (or pounds) per flight between 44.00 and 59.99 euros (or pounds) per flight
Excess baggage charge - 12 euros (or pounds) per kg
Special value baggage charge - 50 euros

In general, all services that are added after booking have a higher cost. This also applies to the simple copy of the boarding pass, which at the airport costs up to 20 euros (or pounds), but also to check in, which at the airport costs up to 55 euros (or pounds). In addition to classic baggage, the loading of any extra item is more expensive if it is not requested at the same time as booking. For example, transporting a bicycle costs 75 euros (or dollars) instead of 60 and similarly for other sports or musical equipment.
