Donald Trump made many promises in the run-up to the 2024 elections. None, however, is as scary as this one.

This is the greatest threat posed by Donald Trump

The accession of Donald Trump to the White House could usher in a new world order, many analysts and political experts worry. Donald Trump is the leading Republican candidate and is set to win the 2024 primaries in a landslide.

His second most popular opponent, Ronald De Santis, is at least 50% below in every national poll conducted on the Republican primaries. As for incumbent president Joe Biden, he too has been consistently below in polls, with the latest showing only 35% of support against Trump’s 43%.

Normally, polls this far from the election yield little to no useful results. In 2007, Democratic candidate Barack Obama was dead last in national polls, and in 2015 a Trump victory was considered a laughable proposition.

Nevertheless, Trump’s popularity is without doubt, which is especially surprising given the 91 criminal charges placed on his head. Donald Trump’s trials have barely started and will unlikely reach a stable conclusion before the November 2024 election.

Political experts argue that a second Trump term would change the global geopolitical balance. He would most likely re-focus on China, taking away resources from the wars in Europe and the Middle East.

Trump now knows that his biggest asset will be loyalists strategically placed in the different branches of government, allowing him to exert power without anyone second guessing.

Trump vs NATO

Possibly the most worrying promise Trump made was the US withdrawal from NATO, the Western alliance put into place after WWII that includes most North American and European nations.

Trump wants to withdraw from NATO based on low commitment by European countries, who have been relying on American gears for security for the past 75 years.

According to NATO’s statute, member nations are required to spend 2% of their GPD on defense budget, a requirement often overlooked because of the strategic importance of NATO for the United States.

However, it seems Donald Trump is willing to give up control over the European continent. Such a move would drive a permanent wedge between Europe and the United States, ensuring the loss of fate in American politics by the whole world.

Europe would have to finance its military spending on its own because the United States would be essentially giving up its seat as the global hegemon.

The United States has gone through different periods of isolationism, which ended only in 1941 with the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. Since then, the United States always projected its influence over the world, always starting in Europe first. Giving up their most important geopolitical asset will ensure the beginning of decades of political instability and, most likely, world war.
