driving license

The points-based licence is the mechanism introduced in Italy starting from Tuesday 1 July 2003 through which every motorist, who is initially assigned 20 points, will have some of them taken away in the event of an infringement of the highway code. and will have to pass the theory test and the driving test again if he ends up losing them all.

Since August 2013, with the Fare Decree, it has also been extended to minors.

There are different types of points-based driving licence:

  • AM driving licence
  • A1 driving licence
  • A2 driving licence
  • Driving license A
  • B1 driving licence
  • License B
  • B+E driving licence
  • C1 driving licence
  • C1+E driving licence
  • C-licence
  • C+E driving licence
  • D1 driving licence
  • Driving license D
  • D+E driving licence

The driving license has an expiry date established by law. For this reason, to continue driving it is necessary to proceed with the renewal of the license, for which a new theory or practical exam is not necessary, but only a medical examination.

This is used to ascertain the existence of the physical requirements necessary for driving and must be done by a doctor from one of the following institutions:

  • ASL;
  • Fire fighters;
  • State Police;
  • military doctor;
  • Railway doctor;
  • medical inspector of the Ministry of Labor.

The renewal of the license must be done based on the expiry date of the document, indicated in point 4b, which varies depending on the type of license and the age of the applicant. For example, the B driving license must be renewed:

  • every 10 years: up to the age of 50;
  • every 5 years: age between 50 and 70;
  • every three years: between 70 and 80 years;
  • every two years: over 80 years of age.

To renew your driving license you need to present a valid identity document, the expired (or expiring) driving license, the tax code, 2 passport photos plus proof of the payments required by current legislation.
