How to find a job? 6 ways to easily find a job

Finding a job today is not as easy as you might think. Although there are so many methods for looking for a job and they are increasingly "digital" (the success of portals like LinkedIn, Indeed and Infojobs is just a consequence of this), many users still ask themselves today: "how can I find a job quickly and easily?". It is important to underline that there is no universal rule. A possible answer is "it depends", especially based on the sector of work in which you are looking, your personal skills and the job market at a given time.

However, there are methods that allow aspiring workers to avoid stumbling blocks, false myths and wastes of time; all aspects that can compromise (or slow down) the landing in the right place. Here, then, is how to find a job through 6 ways (a sort of step by step) to approach the search with the right assumptions.

1) Make the job search your job

The first piece of advice is valid for all seasons, as they say, and is also the most general. There are some key words to keep in mind when you are looking for a job: consistency, commitment and professionalism.

You should know, in fact, that the search for a job is almost as if it were a full-time job, since this should take up most of your day. It is not enough to dedicate one or two hours a day to find a job in a short time, since between creating and updating the Curriculum Vitae, writing the cover letter and searching for the best job ads you are particularly busy.

Therefore, you will have to be constant when looking for a job, dedicating maximum effort to this activity without getting discouraged. At the same time, try to be as professional as possible in everything you do: from writing the Curriculum Vitae to the interview, every description you give of yourself and your skills must convey the message that you are perfect for the job you are applying for.

2) Always updated CV and cover letter

Obviously when you are looking for a job you must have a “business card”: this is the Curriculum Vitae, which must be curated and constantly updated. It is also advisable to modify the CV based on the job offer, focusing a lot on hard and soft skills requested by the ad.

Remember, however, that having a perfect CV is not enough to attract the attention of recruiters: often, in fact, they prefer candidates who attach a cover letter, in which in a few lines you explain why you are applying for that particular position and why the company should choose you.

Also, don’t forget to take care of your social profiles: this is where recruiters often turn when they want to know more about a candidate. So, avoid posting inappropriate photos, videos and phrases that could convey a bad impression of you.

3) Decide what type of job is best for you

The first question to answer is: what type of job should I look for? Both in terms of the sector and other aspects such as the distance from the workplace to the working hours, it is good to give yourself an answer before the search.

Usually, to reach a final decision, it is good to answer three different questions:

  • what I like to do: it would always be appropriate to do the job that we like, that best matches our interests. Only in this way will we be able to give our best in what we do;
  • what I know how to do: at the same time, you need to make a list of your strengths, analyzing what you actually know how to do and whether you have the qualifications to do it. Only in this way will you avoid wasting time in inconclusive job searches;
  • what I can do: finally, evaluate whether you have constraints that could limit the performance of a certain work activity. There could be physical constraints: for example, those who cannot make an effort will obviously not be able to apply for a job on a construction site. But there could also be other constraints, such as family ones (think of those who cannot work in the evening because they have to stay at home with their children). Even the lack of a driving license can be a constraint, especially when the workplace is not easily accessible by public transport.

Once you understand which profession - or professions - best suit you, you can do an analysis of the sector, so as to understand what skills are sought in those who carry out that particular job. And if there are any gaps, you can always intervene with training courses.

It is also advisable to analyze the area, both the one in which you live and the surrounding areas, so as to have a clear where to actually concentrate the job search.

4) Check job ads and sign up to the right portals

Constantly monitor the job ads in your sector of interest: there are several sites where you can do this, some of which also allow you to sign up for a newsletter thanks to which you will receive the latest job offers in your email inbox every day. Among these, the most used today are:

  • Indeed: confirmed as the most visited job portal in many countries. It is a global aggregator that collects offers from thousands of sites, including bulletin boards, newspapers and company pages. It is active in over 50 countries and available in 28 languages;
  • Jooble: this is a Ukrainian search engine active since 2006, present in over 70 countries. It aggregates offers from more than 140,000 global sources;
  • LinkedIn: a professional social network with over 1 billion members globally in 2024. It is widely used for networking, job searches and recruitment.

Don’t neglect "word of mouth"; in this regard, it is a good idea to build a network of contacts, so as to have information from insiders about what job offers there are from various companies and know promptly whether and how to apply.

Even social networks in recent years have become a place to find job ads: for example, on Facebook there are specialized groups where you can sign up to stay informed, but the leading social network for job searches remains the aforementioned LinkedIn (also consider the Premium option).

5) Prepare for the interview, whether by phone or in person

After responding to the job ad, all you have to do is hope to be contacted again. Usually, you will receive a e-mail invitation - to which we recommend you respond promptly - but it is not uncommon for the recruiter to contact you by phone for an initial interview. Pay attention to this step: it could be decisive in obtaining the job.

For this reason, we recommend that you keep track of the job ads you respond to. It is not nice, in fact, to answer the phone and come out with sentences like:

Can you remind me what type of ad this is?

This is a clear demonstration that you are carrying out a confused and untargeted search, and that one company could be as good as another. And even if you desperately need to find a job as soon as possible - and therefore it is true that the company does not make all that much difference - it is very important to give a different impression. Just take a few notes when you send your CV, keeping track of the important points of the ad including the promoting company, to make a good impression right from the start.

Also be careful about what you do at the end of the interview: avoid filling the recruiter with emails and messages to get feedback, because this way you can certainly only make the situation worse. If the recruiter doesn’t get in touch, he will have his reasons: we advise you to be patient, because insistence is a factor that could work against you.

6) Always avoid gross errors (cascading)

Very often we find ourselves having difficulty finding a job despite following the appropriate routine, with a lot of discouragement in tow. Sometimes, this happens because, simply, we insistently look for something that is not suitable for us (wrong sector, not up to par, requests that are too high); other times, however, this stalemate could occur due to trivial errors. Like these.

Poorly written CV (or with mistakes and slips)

The first mistake to avoid when looking for a job is to send CVs containing grammatical errors or typos. This type of error can be decisive in the screening phase: given the numerous applications that are received by those who publish a job ad, a CV containing errors certainly does not encourage the human resources manager to take into consideration the person who submitted it.

It is also important to be able to structure it in a simple and functional way, highlighting your strengths so that they are immediately visible to the selector.

Trivial cover letter

When you are looking for a job and you apply for an offer, it is important to dedicate the right amount of attention to the cover letter. The cover letter, in fact, together with the curriculum vitae, is the business card that should encourage the recruiter to call us: for this reason it is necessary to avoid generic cover letters, which make no reference to the position offered.

Job advertisements read superficially

One of the mistakes to avoid is not paying attention to the indications provided by the recruiter in the job advertisement. In many cases, in fact, it is the company that provides precise indications on how to apply for the position offered: not following the indications provided could be one of the reasons for excluding the candidate from the selections.

Do not wander between portals and search channels

A fundamental role in the job search is played by the ability to choose the search channel used. It is important, in fact, not to fossilize on a single search channel, but to explore several paths to increase the chances of reaching the objective. So, if you usually send applications via email, it is important not to give up on delivering some resumes in person.
