UK government is falling apart, another Liz Truss minister resigns

A new week, a new scandal in the British government. The Conservative Party, currently ruling over the United Kingdom, doesn’t seem to be able to steer the ship back on track. Many wonder how much time Liz Truss has got left as Prime Minister. Anything less than 4 months and she will hold the record of shortest time served in the Nation’s history.

This time, it was Truss’ Interior Minister, Suella Braverman, who resigned her post after just 43 days of tenure. Ms Braverman had to go after an avoidable mistake: she used her personal email to send a ministerial document to an allied MP. She was trying to gather support over a policy, but in doing so she breached security protocols.

Pretending we haven’t made mistakes, carrying on as if everyone can’t see that we have made them, and hoping that things will magically come right is not serious politics.” Braverman explained in her resignation letter. “I resign,” she concluded, only after addressing her serious concerns on the direction of the Government.

Liz Truss’ cabinet, in Braverman’s own words, has “broken key pledges that were promised to our voters”. She went on expressing doubts on the Government’s general commitment.

Suella Braverman’s resignationcomes a few days after the removal of Kwasi Kwarteng as Finance Minister. He was removed from his post following the disastrous proposed tax cuts that sparked immense criticism against Liz Truss and her government.

Who will replace Suella Braverman

Now, the office of Interior Minister of the UK sits vacant. Many pointed at Conservative Transport Minister Grant Shapps as possible replacement.

Shapps has been critical of many of Liz Truss’ policies, including the notorious tax cut plan. His designation, along with Jeremy Hunt at the Finance Minister’s seat, could mark a feeble hope for Truss’ tenure.

It might signal a willingness to change direction, which could be very much appreciated by the British electorate. Surely, Liz Truss needs someone that can bring change.

Shapps might also decide to follow Braverman’s policies, which were themselves a continuation of Boris Johnson’s proposals. In particular, Braverman always supported the idea of sending immigrants to Rwanda.

This was Johnson’s idea to resolve the immigration crisis, which itself was a big part of the Brexit discussion. The proposal consists in finding agreements with the government of Rwanda, a British former colony in the heart of Africa, where illegal immigrants would be sent.

There, they would receive some grants by the British government to start a new life. The Conservative party seems to be all aboard this idea, and so it will likely be implemented in the future.
