Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, born on February 26, 1954, is the 12th and current president of Turkey, in office since 2014. After losing his majority in parliament in June 2015, Erdogan was the protagonist of an unexpected triumph at elections in Turkey of November 1, 2015 and resisted a coup d’état attempt in the summer of 2016.

Previously, Erdogan served as Prime Minister of Turkey from 2003 to 2014 and as Mayor of Istanbul from 1994 to 1998.

Of an Islamist nature, Erdogan defines his administration as conservative-democratic.

Erdogan founded the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in 2001, leading it to victory in the general elections of 2002, 2007, 2011, and then became President in 2014.

Recently his choice to start a war in Syria against the Kurds has been strongly condemned by the whole international community, with Turkey wanting to carry out this military action a kind of buffer zone along the Syrian border.
