Rome is the capital of the Italian Republic, as well as the capital of the province of Rome and the Lazio region; by virtue of its status as capital, it is administratively a special municipality. It is defined as the Eternal City and Urbe by antonomasia.
With 2,651,040 inhabitants, it is the most populous municipality in Italy, while with 1,287.36 km² it is the largest municipality in Italy and among the largest European capitals in terms of territory size.
