Amazon launched its answer to ChatGPT: Bedrock. The software has a real potential of wiping out competition in the nascent AI industry.
The Artificial Intelligence race has a new competitor: Amazon. After Microsoft and Google, Amazon is the latest tech giant to jump on the AI ship, announcing their own generative AI software. Bedrock, the name of Amazon’s new creation, will serve as a rival for the world-famous ChatGPT.
The AI craze started last year when OpenAI, a company co-founded by Sam Altman and Elon Musk, developed DALL-E and ChatGPT. The first is an image generator capable of creating complex images with a few prompts, while the second is a similar software that generates text instead.
The general public was now aware of what artificial intelligence could do. Many believed, and many still do, that AI is a technological revolution comparable to the internet.
Microsoft was the first major player in the industry to run after AI. Their $10 billion deal to purchase OpenAI started an integration of ChatGPT into Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, and into the Office Suite.
Soon thereafter, Google announced their own version of ChatGPT: a text-generator named Bard. The software is however still in development after the “$100 billion mistake”.
Now, Amazon announced Bedrock. This new product is marketed to be a rival of ChatGPT, even though its fundamental nature is completely different.
What makes Bedrock different from ChatGPT
While ChatGPT is available for the general public to use, and will likely become a virtual assistant for Microsoft users, Bedrock has a different customer base. Amazon intends to use Bedrock as a virtual tool to develop AI products, integrating them with Amazon Web Services (AWS).
With AWS, Amazon sells users data to businesses, which need it for targeted advertisement. Essentially, with Bedrock businesses will be able to create customized AI products which will be then made available to users through AWS.
Bedrock uses pre-trained models to help AI companies navigate through its technology. Bedrock, like other OpenAI softwares, possesses text and image generating capabilities.
For the moment, Amazon reserved the use of Bedrock to just a few selected companies. When it will be made available, it has the possibility of truly skyrocketing AI research and development.
Amazon shares saw a spike in value on Friday, possibly following the announcement of Bedrock. Currently, Amazon stocks are traded at $102.13.
While Microsoft and Google will fight to the last blood to develop their AI assistants, Amazon is currently the only major player to use AI in a Business-to-Business model.
Furthermore, Bedrock could become the first step in a democratization of AI, which could itself shadow the progress of Microsoft and Google.
