Energy cost alarm apartment complexes. The most energy-intensive element in the bill is the elevator. How much energy does it consume and how much does it cost in the bill?
In an energy saving plan for apartment buildings, the use of the elevator should be avoided. Several experts and associations released statements regarding the attention to be paid to the energy consumption of elevators. The costs for complexes are in fact quite high and, starting from January 2023, these are destined to rise even more.
The invitation is to use the stairs instead of the lift and this is because the average consumption of an elevator represents more than 5% of the total electricity consumption of a building. With the current price of energy, the cost of the condominium bill is a real drain. In January 2023, the exit of the complexes from the protected market is also planned and, without intervention by the State, this will lead to an inevitable increase in the management costs of apartment complexes, including the cost of energy for use of the elevator.
How much does an elevator consume on average?
In residential contexts, elevators are often not of the latest generation and their consumption is higher than those found in offices or shops. In general, elevators generate a rather high consumption, around 10,000 kWh.
There have been improvements in the consumption of elevators, but only if they are more efficient or non-domestic ones. Those present in homes still have a rather significant impact on energy consumption and therefore on the cost in the bill for apartment complexes.
How much does an elevator cost in your bill?
In the face of the current energy crisis and in particular in light of the possibility that buildings remain excluded from the protected market, we must speak of a "building strategy". The energy consumption of an apartment complex is quite high and it is good to think about the energy consumption and therefore the cost of the elevator bill, an element as energy-consuming as it is not indispensable.
Example on the cost of energy data updated to November 8, 2022:
An elevator consumes 10,000 kWh on average.
In the protected market, the energy component alone costs € 0.53451 (November 8, 2022).
Given this information, an elevator costs about € 0.501 per kW.
From these calculations, which do not take into account all the other energy costs and the factor of the building’s exit from the protected market, it is possible to infer that an elevator for a condominium costs an average of 5,300 euros per year in the bill.
How to save on condominium bills: goodbye to the elevator
The lift is an extra in the bill that is completely avoidable, except in case of need. For this reason, the most common advice for saving on condominium bills is to prefer the stairs to the elevator. Simona Bastari, manager of condominiums in Lazio, spoke of a necessary "condominium strategy" for reducing consumption.
The strategy not only serves as regards the gas bill, in the case of central heating for example, but also for savings on the cost of electricity. After all, the most energy-consuming element of an apartment building is the elevator and the only way to save is to prefer the use of stairs. Limiting the use of the lift to only cases of necessity, in the presence of disabled people or loads of exceptional weight, is the first step to save and try to stop the alarm of energy costs for apartment complexes.
