The Spanish economy is among the developed economies of Western Europe. From 1998 to 2008, the country’s economy was among the most vibrant and dynamic in the Eurozone.

However, the effects of the debt crisis were not long in coming, and after several decades of growth (following the end of the isolation imposed by the dictatorship), Spain now finds itself in a borderline situation with two options for the future: bankruptcy (and subsequent withdrawal from the single currency) or the implementation of very rigid austerity policies that are unpopular with the population.
