AMD shares surge 28% on Wall Street after OpenAI deal

Shares of U.S. semiconductor giant AMD, also known as Advanced Micro Devices are seeing strong buying activity following news of the deal signed with OpenAI, the AI pioneer led by Sam Altman, creator of the ChatGPT chatbot, known for developing and training advanced AI models capable of understanding and generating text, images, code, and more.

According to the financial terms of the agreement, OpenAI could acquire up to a 10% equity stake in AMD.

AMD shares are extending gains on Wall Street after the announcement.

For now, it’s known that OpenAI will utilize 6 gigawatts of AI computing capacity using AMD Instinct GPUs over several years and across multiple hardware generations, starting to deploy an initial rollout of 1 gigawatt of chips in the second half of 2026.

In short, AMD GPUs will be used by OpenAI in its data centers to power AI models.

AMD has issued a warrant to OpenAI for a potential 10% stake.

With the agreement, AMD has issued OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million AMD common shares, thus giving the Altman-led company the right to acquire up to 160 million shares., subject to OpenAI meeting certain performance targets and AMD’s share price conditions.

The first tranche will vest when OpenAI deploys the first full gigawatt of AMD GPUs, while subsequent tranches will be released as OpenAI reaches 6 gigawatts, upon reaching key technical and commercial milestones required to scale deployment.

If OpenAI exercises all its warrants, it could hold approximately 10% of AMD’s equity.

Sam Altman, announcing the agreement, stated:

"AMD’s leadership in high-performance semiconductors will enable us to accelerate progress and enable everyone to benefit from AI (artificial intelligence) faster."

The agreement, which includes the largest deployment of GPU chips in the history of artificial intelligence, positions AMD as a key strategic partner for OpenAI.

OpenAI will begin sourcing AMD’s new MI450 chips starting next year, both directly and through cloud partners.

Lisa Su, CEO of the semiconductor group, said the deal will allow her company to generate tens of billions of dollars in revenue over the next five years.

An agreement was also reached a few weeks ago between OpenAI and AI chip giant Nvidia, but the major deal between OpenAI and Oracle is also notable.
