Amazon is doubling down on robotics, announcing a $100 million investment to expand its manufacturing capacity with a new plant dedicated to building robots. The facility adds to the company’s growing footprint of data centers, wind and solar farms, and other infrastructure projects. For now, the focus is on production capacity in Greenwood, Indiana. But if the project succeeds, Amazon is not ruling out similar investments elsewhere in the US and in other parts of the world.

What has drawn the most attention, though, is something else: the roughly 300 new jobs at the plant are expected to pay average salaries of almost $100,000 a year. The announcement has reignited the national debate over robotics and its impact on workers.

The new plant, in detail

Amazon’s new robotics-dedicated facility will bring together advanced manufacturing processes under one roof: robotic welding, automated powder coating, and assembly. The whole operation will be coordinated through Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure and AI-based smart manufacturing software.

Human workers will still be essential, with the plant seeking machine operators, welders, powder-coating technicians, assembly workers, production engineers, quality-control specialists, control-systems engineers, and program managers.

The Greenwood site will become Amazon’s fourth robotics-dedicated manufacturing plant in the United States, following the announcement of a similar hub in Austin, Texas, in August of this year. Together, the two new facilities double the company’s robot production capacity, adding to plants Amazon already operates in Massachusetts.

Worker pay

Holly Sullivan of Amazon said the company is looking to hire 300 new employees in advanced manufacturing roles in Greenwood. The city’s mayor added that average salaries would be nearly $100,000 a year, bringing long-term value to the community.

Those wages sit well above the regional average, and that appears to be by design: Amazon is looking to reward new hires while investing in the Greenwood community and its growth.

Amazon has been steadily expanding its presence in Indiana more broadly. Statewide, the company has invested more than $40 billion since 2008, creating over 27,000 jobs. The Greenwood project extends that trend while also expanding the company’s robotics output: Amazon says it has built more than 1 million industrial robots to date, and this project is aimed at pushing that number even higher.
