Amazon is doubling down on robotics, announcing a $100 million investment to expand its manufacturing capacity with a new plant dedicated to robots, joining the company’s growing portfolio of data centers, wind and solar farms, and other infrastructure. For now, the focus is on building production capacity in Greenwood, Indiana. But if the project succeeds, additional investments of this kind elsewhere in the US, and in other parts of the world, are not off the table.
What has drawn the most attention, though, is something else: human employees at the plant are expected to earn average salaries of nearly $100,000 a year. It’s a striking figure, one that will apply to the more than 300 new jobs planned for the facility. Meanwhile, the announcement has reignited the national debate over robotics and its impact on workers.
Details of the new plant
Amazon’s new robotics-dedicated facility will bring together advanced manufacturing processes under one roof: robotic welding, automated powder coating, and assembly. The whole operation will be coordinated by AWS (Amazon Web Services) cloud infrastructure and AI-based smart manufacturing software.
Human support will still be essential, with roles including machine operators, welders, powder-coating technicians, assembly workers, production engineers, quality-control specialists, control-systems engineers, and program managers.
The Greenwood facility will become Amazon’s fourth robotics production plant in the United States, following the announcement of a similar hub in Austin, Texas, in August of this year. The two new facilities together double the company’s robot production capacity, adding to existing plants already operating in Massachusetts.
Employee salaries
Holly Sullivan of Amazon said the company is looking to hire 300 new employees in advanced manufacturing at Greenwood. The city’s mayor added that average salaries will be close to $100,000 a year and will bring long-term value to the community.
These are wages well above the regional average, and deliberately so: Amazon says it wants to reward the people it hires while investing in Greenwood’s community and long-term growth.
Amazon continues to build up its presence in Indiana more broadly. Statewide, the company has invested more than $40 billion since 2008, creating over 27,000 jobs. The Greenwood project fits that same trajectory, growing both the state’s job numbers and Amazon’s own manufacturing footprint. To date, the company has built more than a million industrial robots, and with this latest project, it aims to push that number higher still.
