The World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2025 has certified the most advanced oncology hospitals in the world

The best cancer hospitals in the the world

Facing a cancer diagnosis is one of the most delicate moments in a patient’s life. In these circumstances, the choice of hospital where to receive treatment can make a huge difference. To navigate the numerous healthcare facilities available it is essential to rely on objective assessments based on sound criteria. And this is precisely the reason that prompted Newsweek, in collaboration with Statista, to publish (as it does every year) the World’s Best Specialized Hospitals ranking, a guide to the best specialized hospitals globally.

The 2025 edition of the ranking analyzed twelve medical areas, including cardiology, pediatrics, orthopedics, neurology, and, of course, oncology—one of the most critical and continually evolving fields thanks to research. Specifically, the 300 best hospitals in the world were identified for oncology, taking into account several parameters: recommendations provided by tens of thousands of healthcare professionals internationally, data relating to facility accreditation, and evaluations based on patient-reported outcomes.

The results reveal a fairly diverse yet exceptionally excellent panorama, which includes renowned centers of excellence such as the Mayo Clinic in the United States and the Charité in Berlin.

The best cancer hospitals in the world

Before discovering our country’s oncology excellence, it’s important to understand where the research began and what the current global benchmarks are. First, what determines the ranking? Let’s start by saying that tens of thousands of healthcare professionals were surveyed, expressing their opinions based on their fields of expertise. And then there are the patients, whose reviews influenced the ranking. In short, we’re talking about a ranking that is as objective as possible and that also speaks Italian in the global top ten. Here is the updated ranking.

LocationHospitalCityState
1 MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston United States
2 Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center New York United States
3 Samsung Medical Center Seoul South Korea
4 Gustave Roussy Villejuif France
5 Asan Medical Center Seoul South Korea
6 Mayo Clinic - Rochester Rochester United States
7 The Royal Marsden Hospital - London London United Kingdom
8 Seoul National University Hospital Seoul South Korea
9 IEO - European Institute of Oncology Milan Italy
10 National Cancer Center Hospital Tokyo Japan

As can be seen, in 2025, the top 10 positions include facilities from the United States (with 3 hospitals), South Korea (3 hospitals), as well as France, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Italy. The "Asian" figure is particularly striking, with four hospitals in South Korea and Japan, which speaks volumes about the medical and scientific progress in these countries.

Italy is represented in 9th place by the IEO - European Institute of Oncology in Milan, founded by Umberto Veronesi and now internationally recognized for the quality of its translational research and personalized cancer treatments. According to AIRTUM (Italian Association of Cancer Registries) data, in Italy, approximately 390,000 new cancer diagnoses are estimated each year, making access to centers of excellence crucial. IEO’s presence in the global top 10 is therefore an important sign of the competitiveness of the Italian healthcare system in oncology, as we will discover with the rest of the ranking.
