On Thursday the discovery of classified documents inside Joe Biden’s residence made the 2024 US elections take another turn.
A new and unexpected development in internal US politics changes predictions for the 2024 election once again. On Thursday, classified documents were recovered in president Joe Biden’s residence in Wilmington, Delaware starting a legal inquiry.
These documents seem to date back to the Obama’s administration, when Joe Biden was serving as Vice-President. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate the matter, which is particularly spiky for Joe Biden and his administration.
Former president Donald Trump is also currently under a similar investigation, for the finding of several classified documents in his Mar-a-Lago residence. The Democratic Party and Joe Biden himself picked on Trump’s handling of classified documents many times, as well as his several other criminal charges.
Now the story has changed. Immediately on Thursday, Donald Trump commented on the story with radio host Mark Levin. “When all of these documents started coming out and Biden had them, it really changed the complexion and the intensity that they were showing to me because, you know, what they did is – I don’t say far worse, I did nothing wrong — what they did is not good. What they did is bad.”
In fairness, there are crucial differences between the two cases. Trump allegedly kept 300 classified documents willingly, knowing about the criminal nature of the act. Biden, on the other hand, is accused of having kept much less documents by mistake.
Further, Joe Biden is also actively collaborating with authorities, while Trump has always been hostile to charges against him.
A scattered political landscape
Despite the differences between the two cases, Biden’s approval will likely take a hit because of the story. In the eyes of Republicans, Biden is already a criminal following the “Hunter Biden laptop” story, and this will only add kerosene on fire.
Donald Trump already said he will run for president again in 2024, though he’s receiving increasingly less support by his party. His declaration and all the investigations on his wrongdoing, including two impeachment trials, are definitely not good publicity.
His declarations of overturning the US constitution and creation of an NFT package just make him a wildcard for Republicans.
On the other hand, however, Joe Biden himself is starting to lose support in the Democratic party. The current president is 80 years old and many just want a fresher option.
Joe Biden has not confirmed he will run again yet. His time in office is starting to see serious results, like the fall of inflation and unemployment. The Afghanistan disaster was overshadowed by the successes in Ukraine and the energy prices are increasingly turning back to normal.
Without him, will the Democrats be able to snatch another election? Will they present a good enough candidate to avoid another victory by Trump? The upcoming election season promises to be exciting… and terrifying.
