The Twitter files story continues, showing evidence that FBI agents were involved with the platform during the 2020 elections.
The Twitter files story gets increasingly more complicated as new claims of FBI interference arise. This story started roughly one month ago, when new Twitter owner Elon Musk promised to clear the dust on some matters.
Elon Musk, billionaire and Tesla CEO, always claimed he wanted to buy Twitter to protect free speech on the platform. Until then, he believed, Twitter tried to censor Republican opinions, always favoring a Democratic agenda.
His Twitter files are supposed to be the ultimate proof of these claims. The first part of the Twitter files, published by journalist Matt Taibbi, show Twitter efforts to block posts about the Hunter Biden scandal. This scandal related to alleged collusion between Joe Biden, his son Hunter and the Ukrainian government, to protect a money-laundering scheme.
When the story was published by the New York Post, a month before the 2020 elections, Twitter actively blocked any individual trying to share it.
Initially, the Twitter files were not welcomed with surprise. Everyone knew Twitter had mainly Democratic users and pushed a Democratic agenda. Apparently, however, the story is much deeper than that.
The last two Twitter files threads (6th and 7th) reveal connections between Twitter’s administration and the FBI, specifically on handling the 2020 elections.
The Twitter files: a continuation
The 6th thread, again published by Matt Taibbi, shows FBI interference in Twitter’s internal policies. In particular, it highlights how the FBI asked for the ban or suspension of some specific accounts.
These accounts, according to Taibbi, were simply jokesters that published satirical posts about government actions. For some, Twitter followed through and suspended them, while others were left online.
The 7th, more explosive thread shows evidence that former FBI agents were part of Twitter staff during the 2020 elections. According to journalist Michael Shellenberger, who published the thread, some of these former FBI agents had top-secret clearance.
Indeed, there were so many of them that had their own Slack channel, all separated in different categories of expertise.
When the Hunter Biden story came out, these FBI agents immediately deemed it a hacking attempt that should therefore be fought against. Allegedly, they endorsed the ban and suspension of any account that would retweet the story.
The implications of this are that FBI agents have interfered with potentially lethal news that could have killed Joe Biden’s campaign. This claim, however, is yet to be proved by any reliable source. It is by no means certain that further spread of this story would have actually made Biden lose.
Still, the fact that FBI agents were involved in internal decisions of a major social media platform is indeed chilling news.
