When we picture where the very rich live, we tend to imagine sprawling estates buried in greenery, oceanfront villas, or old castles sealed off from ordinary people. Few would think of an actual bunker-island shared by some of the wealthiest and most famous people on the planet.
That island exists. It sits about a half-hour drive from Miami and it is called Indian Creek: fewer than 100 residents, a private police force of its own, and a property market where being a billionaire is not, by itself, enough to get in.
The Billionaire Bunker
Over the past two decades, according to Forbes, the number of billionaires who have moved their official residence to Florida has grown exponentially, drawn by a particularly favorable tax regime (Florida levies no state income tax).
Indian Creek, however, is a case of its own, and calling its residents «ordinary» billionaires would be an understatement. This is a private island in Biscayne Bay, roughly 14 miles (23 km) from Miami, protected by water and built around a golf course, where since 2023 no property has changed hands for less than $64 million, about €55 million.
The record came in March 2026, when Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, bought an estate on the island for around $170 million — a little over €145 million — according to the trade publication The Real Deal. It is the largest residential transaction ever recorded in Miami-Dade County.
A fortified island
Indian Creek functions as a self-contained enclave, effectively impregnable. It has its own village government, a private security force of 13 officers on watch 24 hours a day, a marine patrol that keeps paparazzi and curious boaters at a safe distance, and a single point of access: a bridge guarded day and night.
The houses are laid out around a private golf course, so that the entire perimeter is occupied and no new buildable lots can be carved out.
Who lives there today
Indian Creek is currently home to fewer than 90 residents, spread across the 41 ultra-luxury lots on the island.
Besides Zuckerberg, the best-known residents include Jeff Bezos, who owns several lots; Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, owners of an estate there since 2021; NFL legend Tom Brady; and the DJ and music producer David Guetta, who bought a luxury villa in 2023.
Property on the island is also held by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the billionaire investor Carl Icahn, ESL Investments founder Eddie Lampert, and entertainment figures such as the supermodel Adriana Lima and the Spanish singer Julio Iglesias.
