Joe Biden runs for president: 2024 elections could be a Trump-Biden showdown again

80 years old US president Joe Biden announced his candidacy for the 2024 American general elections on Tuesday. Biden will run again for the Democratic party and is currently the only member of that political force presenting his nomination.

Joe Biden has a decades-long career in US politics. His first public office was as Delaware senator starting in 1972. Biden retained the position of senator until 2009, when he became vice-president under the Obama administration.

When Donald Trump won the elections in 2016, Biden temporarily retired from public life becoming a foreign politics professor for the University of Pennsylvania.

In 2020, amidst the Covid pandemic that killed over a million US citizens, Joe Biden ran as president for the Democratic party.

He faced a fierce Donald Trump, who was dead set on retaining his office as president. Donald Trump, however, eventually lost against Biden. For the first time in US history, a president refused to recognize the outcome of the elections, threatening the wellbeing of American democracy.

Donald Trump was impeached two times and, once removed from office, was accused of many criminal charges. He is also involved in the January 6th 2021 assault to the Washington Capitol perpetrated by Republican supporters.

Nevertheless, Trump too presented his nomination as president for the 2024 elections.

Biden-Trump showdown… again

So far, Biden and Trump are the only members of their respective party to present their nomination as US president. Despite the fact that most Democratic voters would like Biden to lose the US primaries and Trump was recently indicted, the 2024 elections are currently set to be a repetition of the 2020 ones.

Donald Trump faces criminal charges following his affair with pornstar Stormy Daniels. Trump was the first former or current US president to be arrested, facing a trial that will start next December.

Trump risks a 4 years jail period, which would obviously prevent him from running in 2024.

On the other hand, the Republican party seems to be in complete shambles, with no real alternative to Donald Trump. Florida’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis will likely be another candidate, but his will be a difficult race.

DeSantis has sided with Trump following his charges, which does not bode well for the primaries. DeSantis will have to challenge Donald Trump on matters he already supported him on. According to many analysts, DeSantis is unlikely to win over the core Trump supporters, which currently make the bulk of Republican voters.

On the other hand, the Democratic party seems to be out of ideas too. No real challenge stands in the way of Joe Biden for the moment, with the elections one year and a half away.

Anything can happen during this time. But if the elections were to be held tomorrow, Biden would be the clear winner.
